Foggy Dawn, Blazing Heart

2 March 2019

Here’s a poem I wrote a few years ago. I occasionally use poetry and/or songwriting in moments of intense learning experiences, usually brought about by a difficult emotional experience.

In my trying to make sense of things and find the resources I know I possess, as we all do, to deal with what life throws at us, I have come to expect these epiphanies.

As I come through them, the echoes of painful emotions blend with a new optimism and clarity which sparks my creative imagination. And so, I feel the need to capture the stream of consciousness that flows through me at these times.

Apart from being hugely therapeutic, it is an incredible experience in and of itself. Just as when I improvise on the piano, late at night, when my fingers seem to move by themselves, to an unseen energy that I allow to be channelled through me – my Muse.

I have even found myself drifting off to sleep, waking and still playing, it’s a strange sensation.

It’s like it’s not me playing, or writing, but the very essence of the universe.

I cannot claim to master the art of channelling this energy, to produce masterpieces of poetry or music. But it inspires me and I hope it will inspire you a little.

So I now dedicate this short poem to all of you, with all my love.

Foggy Dawn, Blazing Heart

The winter night still clings,

As I emerge from my cocoon;
But knowing what each day brings

Will disperse the darkness soon.

While fog embraces all around,

And sleepy eyes within,

Like yang, the clarity I’ve found

Is balance for the yin.

The freezing air is nought to me

For my heart is burning bright,

And thoughts ablaze are running free,

Like fireflies in the night.

Yet now the night has slipped away,

As quickly as it came,

The sun creeps in with feet of clay

Its place with us to claim.

For nothing is without its flaw

And even stars can fail,

So look within and look with awe –
Your heart of gold to hail!

Vines at dawn near Lleida, Catalonia (Spain).
A favourite meditation spot.
