@speeding At the bottom of the page you'll find the RSS feed. I'm not a big fan of the giant orange RSS logo at the top of the page, that's all! Enjoy!

Would you mind enabling rss feeds, because this page is difficult to read on my phone. Don't mean to be a complainer, but I figure if it would help me it would probably help others as well. Thanks :)

Thanks for the comment...I noticed shortly after your post - it's a Wordpress plugin issue affecting all browsers, not just opera (I use various unusual browsers too!) Just need to sort out the multilingual plugin now and start blogging again...

Hi. I just noticed that your site looks like it has a few code errors at the very top of your website’s page. I’m not sure if everybody is getting this same problem when browsing your site? I am employing a totally different browser than most people, referred to as Opera, so that is what might be causing it? I just wanted to make sure you know. Thanks for posting some great postings and I’ll try to return back with a completely different browser to check things out!

Thank you so much, this was a good read. I was actually born in Madrid ( not telling when though!) but moved around europe and lastly settled in Britain when I was a teenager. I dont remember much of the few years I was in spain, but the smell of spanish food always seems to ring a bell in me or something. It's weird how I dont remember anything except the smells, isn't it! I even found a whole website dedicated to <a href="http://www.spanishrecipe.net/food/spanish-recipe/" rel="nofollow">spanish recipes</A>, which gave me great delight and thought I really should to share. Anyway, thank you again. I'll get my husband to add your feed to my rss thing...

This is beginning to look like an Esperanto convention...

However desirable a language that is neutral to everyone may be, there will never be enough momentum to reach critical mass of usage. The historic rise of English and future rise of Chinese are due to socio-political and above all economic factors that put purely cultural or idealistic linguistic projects in the shade.

One of these factors, of course, has been the adoption of English precisely as a neutral (non-native) official language in many countries - known as 'institutionalisation'. It is logical these countries choose a language which is actually useful and <em>in use</em> by a significant part of the world.

Since Spanish was the first European language to be spoken in North America and there are over 45 million Hispanics, it is not so much a preference as a reality for other Americans that Spanish is the biggest and nearest foreign language impacting their lives, so this is not surprising.

The original point of this post was to warn native English speakers, especially in Britain, where there is no one major foreign language within its borders and so no direct pressure to learn one - in some respects <em>any</em> - other language. The discipline of learning any foreign language, particularly for native English speakers who do not have a grounding in grammar, will reduce the threat of competition from the rest of the world.

By definition, speakers of Esperanto have already made this leap. I did not intend for this to turn into a debate on a common language, so I may move this thread to a new page.

Thanks anyway for the contributions.

Anything that encourages a move away from mono-lingualism I'm in favour of and I do love the idea of Esperanto, not just for the independence it has from any national language but for the mixture of languages that gave birth to it.

I'm not sure it has the legs, however and most people would regard Esperanto as an interesting, but ultimately unsuccessful, experiment. Your link seems to be down at the moment but I would encourage people to check back, as I certainly will be.

Vive la différence, I say! (but that's partly because I like to mix the language up a bit...;-))

Update: esperanto.net is back up. I had forgotten the delights of esperanto - check out this site which helps you '<a target="_blank" href="http://www.lernu.net/" rel="nofollow">lerni esperanto</a>'. You'll quickly be able to say "Mi fartas bone"! (clue to non-speakers - there's a dictionary on the site...that's all the help I'm giving you!)

You don't mention another linguistic phenomenon, namely Esperanto. I am convinced that Esperanto as a wider role to play as the world's lingua franca.

Take a look at www.esperanto.net

What do you think?
